News

Social enterprise AFBE-UK Scotland has announced energy operator Spirit Energy has signed up as a corporate partner.

Headquartered in the UK, Spirit Energy is one of Europe’s top independent oil and gas operators and employs more than 700 people across four countries.

Joy Egborge Co-Chair of Spirit Energy’s Ethnicity Committee said: “The decision to become a corporate member of AFBE-UK Scotland reflects Spirit Energy’s long-term commitment to foster diversity and inclusion across the energy sector.”

Stephie Pascal, the Ethnicity Committee’s other Co-Chair continued: “AFBE-UK Scotland inspires their members to make greater contributions to their fields and we have seen their successes in promoting the benefits and opportunities of science and engineering to young, black and minority ethnic people. We are delighted to formally support the organisation.”

Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of Aberdeen-based AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Spirit Energy on board as a corporate member. It is fantastic to receive this level of commitment and endorsement from a modern, forward-thinking business.”

AFBE-UK Scotland promotes diversity and inclusion. It encourages all young people, particularly those of black and minority ethnic (BME) origin, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

The group, which has engaged with thousands of young people at its events across Aberdeen and Edinburgh, was established in 2011.

The organisation has three engagement programmes: its schools programme, NextGen, in which industry professionals give up their time to highlight engineering as a career choice to pupils; Real Projects, which invites industry professionals to speak on their area of expertise, and Transition, which gives students and recent graduates practical career advice through talks, CV reviews and mock interviews.

AFBE-UK Scotland is part of London-based AFBE-UK. Spirit Energy becomes the latest corporate member, joining a list that includes Bloomberg, Institution of Engineering and Technology and WSP.
